Pay Per Click, or PPC, is a major type of Search Engine advertising. PPC is also one of the most cost-effective ways of getting targeted internet visitors. According to Forbes magazine, PPC accounts for 2 billion dollars a year and is expected to increase to around 8 billion dollars by the year 2008.

How does PPC work?

Search Engines display advertisements alongside search results, and also on publisher websites. Advertisers bid against each other to receive higher rankings for a specific keyword or phrase. The highest bidder for a given keyword, or phrase, will have ads located higher in the search results list, the top, or first, being the most desirable location. The top rankings are most often clicked.

Second and third tier bidders, and on down to the lowest bidder, will appear lower on the list, or page, and on other pages, and, therefore, less likely to be generate traffic.

How do you make money by using PPC in your affiliate marketing business?

Most affiliate programs pay when a sale is made, or a lead delivered, or some other required action must occur. If a visitor to your affiliate website clicks your affiliate link, you will not earn anything unless that person completes the required action.

You can use PPC to augment your affiliate program in two ways. First, you can purchase PPC advertising to drive traffic to your website, and entice visitors to click-through to your affiliate websites, and possibly earn a commission. And, second, you can publish search engine PPC ads on your website, and gain income from visitors who click-on those ads.

Unless you are getting huge volumes of traffic, already, the earnings are less for PPC publishers, on a click for click basis, but at least you are earning income from visitors who aren’t clicking you affiliate links, anyway.

Not only will you get a commission from those who are browsing the web, you will be able to build your site’s recognition as a valuable PPC resource. The visitors who have found what they needed from your site are likely to come back and review what you are offering more closely. Then they will eventually come back to search the web for other products.

Take the time, now, and learn more about how you can use PPC advertising as part of your affiliate program, to earn higher profits.
